In the last major tournament of the year, Fullerton College's debate team earned a second place finish at the Palomar Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association tournament.

Eric Kim and Maria Mohammed made up the only team representing Fullerton at Palomar, but their showing was perhaps the best of the year.

After winning four of their first five debates, Mohammed and Kim were pit against San Diego State University. In what was a close debate on torture in the U.S., Mohammed was penalized for using the term "charge" instead of "prosecute."

"It was a technicality that cost them the debate," said Doug Kresse, forensics director. "We were thrilled with the outcome, though."

In a tournament that had over 40 teams in contention, the lone FC duo came away with secondplace after debating topics ranging from same sex marriage to high school exit exams.

Because the Palomar tournament signified the last major tournament, both Kim and Mohammed looked forward to what next semester had to bring.

"It has been a great year for us," Kim said. "We have already started preparing for next year. Hopefully we can start a debate club to attract more people."

Kresse was also optimistic at what the future had in store for FC debate. "We like to win, but the win-loss does not tell the entire story," Kresse said. "Now when you go to tournaments, people know about Fullerton and our debate team."
