When attending an event, it is wiser to lower your expectations so that anything that hits you across the face will at most only disappoint your prospects.

Unfortunately, even my somewhat bleak expectations were over-the-top for Fullerton Beautiful's Open Garden Tour.

The annual tour featured nine private gardens of various designs and assortments Sunday, as well as a plant sale hosted by the Fullerton College Horticulture Department.

However, the garden tour was more of an opportunity for the homeowners to flaunt their lavish houses than to humbly manifest their gardens.

Houses decked with large swimming pools, hot tub and builtin barbeque grills were more on display than nature.

The tour, which necessitated more driving than walking, was not worth the $10 cost of the map, unless you happen to be a fanatical garden lover who loves to drive up and down steep hills and gawk at yard decor, hoping for inspiration.

If motivation strikes, The horticulture department opens a spring plant sale May 2-3 and May 8-9.

On the first day of the sale, guest speaker Mark Fierle will teach how to grow your own food in whatever space you have through square foot gardening. The department is located on the south side of Berkeley at FC.
