On Dec. 1, 1988, the idea to spend a day in observance of those who were victims of AIDS was officially formed.

Now, more than 20 years later, World AIDS Day is about more than just remembering those who have contracted HIV and have died from AIDS. It is about educating people on what the disease actually is and how one can prevent contracting it.

Fullerton College will be observing the event tomorrow, in front of the library. Unlike many of the events held on the quad, this one is meant to have a somber tone.

"The event is hugely important," said Deanna Farsakh, health educator at FC. "We are trying to increase awareness." According to Farsakh, of the 40,000 Americans who have AIDS, roughly half are under 25 years old.

In order to promote education awareness about AIDS, the Health Center will be providing free HIV testing throughout the rest of the week.

Farsakh believes one reason so many young people contract AIDS is because they are afraid to talk to their partners about safer sex practices.

"If you're having sex, protect yourself," she said. "I would like to see condoms become more of a norm."

During the event, there will be different organizations on campus to provide information about AIDS, as well as other sexually transmitted diseases.

There will also be a video playing throughout day in remembrance of people who have succumbed to AIDS.
