Gospel, international and Disney music are some of what audience members heard at the 25th Annual Musicians at Work concert on March 19.
Featuring students from the schools concert choir and chamber singers, the concert, however, was not only a feature of those two groups. Instead it was also a spotlight on solo performers, and duets playing pop songs, original songs and music from movies and musicals.
The first notable thing about this concert was the attire of the group. The members came out in jeans, t-shirts, button-up shirts; some of the ladies wore skirts. There was nothing formal about the members at all.
However, the lack of formal wear was certainly not an impact on the music. The night started off strong with a number called Musicians at Work, and the music held up the rest of the night through.
The show was divided into different segments. After the intro song of Musicians at Work, the International song section started off, with songs from Cuba, Russia, Urguay and the Philippines. The concert then went to pop songs, and then after that was the section of original songs written by students. After that there were two more pop songs and then the gospel section. The show then ended with music from movies and TV's.
The standout song of the night was a cover of "Step Into the Bad Side" from the musical Dreamgirls performed by students Ishmon Brown, Greg Gletcher, Kameron Owens, and Bijan Slack. They were hands down the audience's favorite, not only did they impress the audience with their singing abilities, but the also had great choreography. Not to mention the funniest scene of the night where three of the members left the stage and then came out dressed in drag.
Other highlights from the night include Daniel Agee and Karena Nava for their performance of "Ah Sweet Mystery" from the musical Throughly Modern Millie, Charlene Gibbs for her original number "Distractions," "Listen" performed by May Nalasa, also from the musical Dreamgirls, and "Beautiful Girl" by Steven Teats, who also performed the song with Jackson McDonald and Sai Boddupalli.
Overall, it was a fantastic night with great music performed wonderfully by the students.
