With Halloween just around the corner, Paramount Pictures has released the creepy sequel to a popular horror franchise. Paranormal Activity 3 takes us back to when it all started.
Back in 1988, young Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) and Katie (Chloe Csengery) keep encountering something very strange, something that only Kristi can see. While their mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) writes it all off as childhood fantasy, her boyfriend Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith) decides to document this activity, setting up cameras all over their home. However, he soon discovers the activity is far from playful.
What makes the Paranormal Activity movies so scary isn't special effects or even the plot. It's the atmosphere. The tense feeling that something is going to happen, grows with every moment of the movie.
The events start out small, somewhat obscure, but still visible. The knowledge that these events will get worse is what causes the tension, creating the perfect space for terror. It's what makes the movie magic.
The story is intriguing and keeps audiences guessing. The second sequel ties the first two movies together and answers many questions, as well as providing new ones. The last fifteen minutes is the real roller coaster of thrills for them movie.
What also makes this movie so enjoyable was the small amount of special effects. The beauty of the movie is that the effects are not over the top. There is a realness that gives the feeling that everything seen was, in fact, filmed in real life resulting in a greater sense of anticipation, tension, then terror. The simplicity is what pulls this movie together and makes it so scary.
The acting wasn't Oscar quality, but it was better than most horror movies. There were moments where terror could be seen in the eyes of the characters and others where there was a disconnect between the actor and character, but in general the acting was adequate.
If you are looking for a good scare, Paranormal Activity 3 is the movie to see. While not as good as the original, it still lives up to its namesake and is worth the price of admission.
