The Fullerton College men's soccer team took part in a physical game concluding in a 2-1 win over Irvine Valley College on Oct. 3.
Fullerton came ready to play, and quickly got on the board in the 11th minute, when midfielder Andres Morilla was able to tap the ball in.
The goal came after forward Bryan Bautista collided with IVC goalkeeper. Hearing no whistle, Morilla put the shot in net.
A stellar defensive performance from the Hornets kept the Lasers scoreless in the first half.
Fullerton (8-2-2, 2-0-1) duplicated its first half start, doubling their lead when Juan Marroguin put a shot past the Irvine Valley
goalkeeper on a pass from midfielder Jesse Preciado.
The second half continued to be physical, as Irvine Valley benefited from free kick opportunities.
The Lasers (3-4-2, 1-1-0) were able to get on the board in the 77th minute, when a header went just out of the reach of Eduardo Gutierrez.
Irvine Valley would have more scoring chances, but would not
capitalize on those opportunities, giving the Hornets a 2-1 victory.
The Fullerton women's soccer team also found success on the field, with a 2-0 win over Santa Ana
College on Oct. 3.
"It's nice for our defense and our goalie to get another shutout," said Pam Lewin, head coach.
Goalkeeper Amenaghawon Ogiamein was aggressive when she needed to be, coming out of the box four times to stop the Dons' (2-9, 0-6) scoring opportunities.
Play was even, until midfielder Thea Nolan was able to get through two defenders and put the ball past the Santa Ana goalkeeper in the
40th minute.
"I think in the first half, we played down to their level of play, which is more of a kickball style," Lewin said. "In the second half, we were able to regroup, and we were able to finish, which is something we've been struggling with."
The Hornets kept the ball for a majority of the second half as the defense limited the Dons scoring chances and generated additional time of possession.
Fullerton (6-3-2, 3-2-2)?would add another goal in the 78th minute when freshman Ashley Wysor put a strong shot in net. Wysor led the Hornets with seven shots on goal.
The Hornets have now won three straight conference games. During the winning streak, Ogiamein has surrendered just one goal, as well as posting two shutouts.
"We just have to keep getting better," said Lewin. "We've been able to create chances all year, but we need to finish the chances we create out in front of the goal. We have a really hard week coming up."
