Leonardo DiCaprio with Clint Eastwood should have potential to be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it fell a little short of that masterpiece potential.
J. Edgar Hoover ran the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the first director. He thoroughly enjoyed digging up people's stories and background, even getting into a nasty investigation of President Kennedy himself. Although, he went searching for the truth and the hidden secrets about people, especially those in politics, J. Edgar Hoover has a few secrets of his own.
Eastwood's movies are usually top-notch, but this one isn't even comparable to "Gran Torino" or "Million Dollar Baby." Eastwood writes the musical score for all of his movies, and J. Edgar seemed a little lacking in the music department. His music was soft and somewhat whispery, where it would have had a bigger effect had the music been dramatic. For such a dramatic and investigative movie, the score should have been harder.
The acting was absolutely impressed with Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench, and Naomi Watts, however, the same cannot be said for Armie Hammer. Hammer did a wonderful job in parts of "J. Edgar," but his performance of the elderly Clyde Tolson was awful.
Overall this was a movie that exceeded my expectations, but by no means is it the best movie of the year. With Eastwood, Black, and DiCaprio all working on the same movie, it should have been better.
