Students from Fullerton College's Torch magazine and The Hornet newspaper were recognized for their achievements and excellence in journalism. The students attended the Journalism Association of Community College's Southern California Regional Conference held this past weekend at Cal State Fullerton.

The annual conference is host to hundreds of journalism students from 33 Southern California community colleges, who get together to attend workshops given by industry professionals and to compete head-to-head in various journalistic competitions. Fullerton College had 16 students attend the conference this year, and nearly all of the FC students who entered a competition won an award.

"It is a great opportunity for the students," said Jay Seidel, publications adviser and journalism instructor at Fullerton College. "We had a lot of students who are new to the publications this semester attend the conference. They learned a lot and did great in the competitions. I'm very proud of them."

The two-day conference also recognizes the journalistic achievements of students who worked on publications in the previous semester. This is done through a mail-in competition where students submitted their best work at the end of spring semester.

A number of Fullerton College students from both last spring and the current semesters walked away with awards and recognition this year.

"The students were very excited and Fullerton College can be proud of both its student publications and the students who work on them," Seidel said. "They represented Fullerton College very well!"
