The Michael Jackson tribute tour, "Immortal" by Cirque Du Soleil, thrilled fans last night at the first of its two scheduled performances at the Honda Center this month. The production combined the well-known acrobat-like stunts of Cirque Du Soleil with Jackson's music and choreography. If there is one thing that could be determined by the reaction of the audience after the show, it is that the pop singer's talent and legacy will not soon be forgotten.
Fans left in tears after the finale that highlighted his accomplishments as a musician and as an advocate for social equality and justice. Although the dedication to Jackson proved appealing to fans, the storyline of the show was a bit unclear. After an introduction that showed his life and career, the production began with a mime who was lost and confused. It was not clear whether or not the mime was supposed to be Jackson himself or just a random mime. After the mime wandered around for a minute, the first song began and several other dancers joined him on stage.
Throughout the show, the mime would get lost between acts until the next song started. At one point, during Jackson's hit "Beat It," the mime even turned into a giant glove. Fans seemed to appreciate the reference to the singer's famous glove he is known for, the appearance of the glove did not seem to have any relation to the obscure plot.
Although the storyline was not quite clear, the show recognized the singer's success throughout his lifetime, with performances to hits such as "Thriller" and "Beat It", which the audience seemed to appreciate. Other than a couple of songs that did not deserve to be in the show, "Immortal" primarily featured hits that most fans would want to see. The applause after the show along with the standing ovation indicated that the tribute to the legend met the standards of even his most devoted fans. "Immortal" will have another show at the Honda Center tonight, along with performances Jan. 27-29 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.
