The Hornets' men basketball team keeps their playoff dreams alive as they clinched a 79-77 win over the visiting Santa Ana College Dons this past Wednesday.
Going into the game, Santa Ana knew this was going to be their last game of the season while Fullerton (10-15, 7-4) came in needing the win if they had any chance at the playoffs.
With a lot on the line and the Dons (8-16, 2-9) trying to play spoilers, the game was extremely physical from the get-go; with a technical foul and a flagrant foul being called in the opening minutes of the game. By the end of the game, there were three players fouling out.
The Hornets, off to a rough season with a fairly young team this year, have really pulled through down the stretch by working together, creating a solid defense, and an aggressive offense. Fullerton managed to overcome poor shooting from the line, making only 2 of their 6 free throw attempts in the last few minutes, by never letting up and pushed the Dons down to wire when they forced a turnover from Robert Clark with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.
Cody Harris came hot off the bench for the Hornets, scoring 22 points, including five 3's and one rebound, taking advantage of the Dons' lack of pressure on him. Fullerton's starting shooting guard, Chris Nelson, played an extremely intense game, applying the pressure on defense while finishing the game with 17 points and five rebounds.
With the Dons coming off a seven game losing streak, their leading scorer, Chase Miller, had 21 points and three rebounds. Santa Ana's Kevin Ramirez, who set a solid pace for the game while staying relaxed under a tough Hornet defense, finished the game with 12 points and one rebound.
The Hornets look to clinch a playoff spot as they play host to Irvine Valley College this Friday. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
