Creeping into the Corporate World
Working and juggling school is a common lifestyle taken on by community college students. Though many of is hold part time jobs, retail, food service, or customer service call centers, some of us, after a few jobs and some semesters later, find ourselves picked up by a corporate/office job, either through networking, job placement, or the ever so popular monster.com.
Making your way into the office job isn't always the typical Office Space/Dilbert scenario you would expect it to be. Yes cubicles usually are in order, along with the occasional temperamental fax or copy machine. However the office job can be rewarding.
But here I have gotten off the beaten path. The point of this was to give some tips.
Not all of us get very much advice when we enter the corporate world. And by that I mean composure and dress.
If you're job includes a boss and not a manager or shift lead; if you enter a building and spend 9-5 there at a desk; if you receive a desk and salary starting over minimum wage; then you have more than likely reached a stage in your job career where you need to follow a few guidelines.
Concerning composure and self-control
Cell phones should stay on vibrate, if they are on at all. And believe me your coworkers do not want to hear about the crazy party life you lead on the weekend or personal mushy phone calls to your significant other. Take a break, go in the hall, and hold your conversation there.
Music should be listened to through headphones, and headphones alone. You may be the best in show at karaoke on Thursdays, or perhaps the next American idol but do not sing along, please.
Do not spread rumors, do not bad mouth, or put down someone in the company to another coworker. The ears have walls, your email has eyes, this is big brother now so be careful.
Along with the Do not's - do not get into a relationship with someone at work. She may be cute, he may have a great personality, but it will only end badly. You will work together during the day, and then see eachother at night. Your conversations will undoubtedly revert to work related topics. It will not mesh.
