Kathy Maus recieved the Fullerton College Classified Senate Employee Recognition Award on Thursday for her service to the Fullerton College faculty and students. Maus is a supervisor in the mailroom, and has been a part of the Fullerton College staff for over 25 years.
"It was a complete shock to me," Maus said, "It's the first year they've had this award."
As a supervisor in the mailroom, Maus is in charge of all the incoming and outgoing mail for the entire campus. She accepts mail from standard couriers suchas DHL or Fed Ex, and also has access to special mail services that deliver district-wide mail, and mail to Cypress College.
Students can have packages or leters mailed through the United States Postal Service, via the school's mail room, as long as the postage is correct.
Work in the mail room is not usually the most stressful job on the campus, but Maus gets a fair share of busy days.
"It's a little demanding, when the semester ends, or a new one begins," Maus said.
Maus is also in charge of making photocopies for the professors. She is employed 12 months out of the year; the only full-time position in the mail room. At the beginning of a semester, almost every class needs handouts made, and towards the end of the semester, time is of the essence. Summer sessions are the most hectic, because of the constricted time-frame.
When professors need handouts, or any high-volume copies, they turn to Maus, and the other employees in the mail room. She handles requests for copies with advanced notice, and sometimes same-day urgent requests.
