The Rumor mills have been working over time, starting a melee in the community of Fullerton's sushi lovers. Crab served at Chomp's Rockin' Sushi and Teppan Grill of Fullerton, had been contaminated by a recent outbreak of Lung
Fluke Infection caused by the paragonimus westermani parasite.
The Infection is caused by eating live sawagawni Japanese River crabs. Thisoutbreak is new to the states, one reason why it was so hard for health officials to identify the problem when the first two patientswerediagnosed July 26th, 2006.
Hildy Meyers M.D., Epidemiology and Assessment Medical Director was able to identify the rare infection. Typically the symptoms take 6-10 weeks to appear after the initial ingestion.
Cough, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and hives are all key reactions. The infection can not be transmittable from person to person, and can be cured by antibiotics. If not treated, however, it can spread like all illnesses.
The Sawagani crab, known as Regal or Japanese crab, have been popular in America over the past 10 years. This is the first outbreak of this kind.
Sawagani Crab is most popular in sushi bars that have the "Rockin' theme" all over Orange County and 15 other counties.
The sawagni crab is a fresh water crab that was being served at various locations in Orange County. They are purchased in bags of 20-25 weekly. It was one of these purchases made in July that had contained the dangerous parasite.
Presently, only four cases have been confirmed. The only restaurant that served the infected crab was RipTide in Mission Viejo.
The Orange County Health Care Agency made public that the outbreak was caused by eating crab undercooked or raw and was identified at two California restaurants, Chomp's Rockin' Sushi and Teppan Grill in Fullerton, CA and Riptide Rockin' Sushi and Teppan Grill in Mission Viejo,CA. Both restaurants are owned by Dan Lauriano.
The Orange County Register ran an article that caused Dan Lauriano to feel as though he had been attacked by the media. He has since asked for a

You seem to be mistaken...My good friend who lives in Fullerton, has this parasite, which he got from eating these crabs at Chomps. Nice to defend the owner and Fullerton, but the owner is incorrect in saying no one got this very painful, damaging parasite from his Fullerton restaurant. (Continued…)
