The Fullerton Hornets were 1:22 from victory, but denied by a last second prayer. Fullerton (0-1) falls to Bakersfield (1-0) in 2OT 31-24.
On a night when the Hornets solid play was overshadowed by 8 fumbles, 4 of which resulted in turnovers.
"Bottom line is you can't afford to have four turnovers and forced bad snaps, you can't do that, that is not only eight lost plays, that's four to five lost possessions." Said, Assistant Head Coach Tim Byrnes. "Young players make young mistakes."
The Hornets defense played stingy football giving up a total of 261 yards which, only 67 of those were rushing yards. The offense played well accumulating a total of 347 yards, 181 through the air and 166 on the ground. Hornets QB Luke Tracy led the way not only in passing (141), but in rushing as well (71).
"I'm very proud of the kids, both [defensively] and offensively", said Byrnes, "because they got to play very hard."
On a warm and humid night in Bakersfield, the Renegades drew first blood by kicking an 18-yard field goal by K Teddy Dellaganna with 2:45 left in the first quarter.
Bakersfield was held to that field goal when it appeared Renegade QB Daniel Hoff had an open lane to the end zone, when out of nowhere Fullerton CB Conrad White made an upending open field tackle to save a touchdown, forcing the field goal.
The second quarter was all Hornets.
The renegades had the ball for a total of 3:30 in the second quarter. Fullerton tied the game with a Luis Cruz field goal early in the second.
Later in the quarter in a first half that looked like both teams were breaking loose the off season rust ended with Fullerton QB Luke Tracy, scrambling, eluding sacks to find open WR Marquis Avery in the end zone for a 16 yard hookup.
The Navy and White were up 10-3 at the half.
The lead did not last long, as Bakersfield answered quickly in the 3rd quarter on a 72 yard touchdown pass from Hoff to WR Attrail Snipes evening the score at 10.
