The Lady Hornets came up short in their season opener losing to El Camino 3 sets to 1.
El Camino stormed out taking the first set 30-18, forcing Fullerton Coach Rapp to call two early timeouts to help nullify the Lady Warriors momentum. The second set started just as the first set for El Camino (1-0) going up on Fullerton(0-1) 10-2.
Coach Rapp then called yet another timeout to rally his troops. This time the Lady Hornets responded by rallying, just missing a second set victory 30-26.
The momentum Fullerton gathered in the second set carried over into the third set taking a quick lead and never looking back taking their first set against the Lady Warriors in a few years 30-26. Coach Rapp agreed, "First we changed the lineup a bit, they felt pretty good.
We got a couple of key plays from the middle blockers then from the string of blocks we started pulling points and not waiting for them to give us points."
The fourth set however did the Lady Hornets in, as they seemed to lose focus by committing some mental errors. They then seemed to get it together, making a comeback. By then it was too little too late. Losing their final set and match 30-21.
Although the Lady Hornets fell they showed resilience and heart, an outstanding quality to have especially for being as young as they are.
This young Fullerton team has some good freshmen that could potentially lead to serious depth making this team dangerous.
A couple of stand out freshmen from the season opening match were Gina Conley with 11 kills, along with Jena Curry with 21 digs.
The more experienced sophomores came to play as well, getting outstanding play from Lindsay Laakso with her 15 kills and Jessica Stehle with 26 assists.
If this team stays focused and keeps that resiliency and heart they displayed Friday night at El Camino there will be good things to come for this young and feisty Lady Hornets Volleyball team.
