Ahoy me hearty! May yer sails stay full and yer powder dry! Loose translation? September 19 is annual "Talk Like a Pirate Day."

On this day and this day only, climb aboard the pirate party line and feel free to spout off like Long John Silver without the fear that people will look at you as if you've swallowed too much seawater.

TLAPD was started by John Baur and Mark Summer, or better known as Ol' Chumbucket and Cap'n Slappy in June 1995. The two were playing racquetball one afternoon, when one of them was hit by the ball going at a smart rate, and let out a resounding "Arrrr!" For the remainder of the time, Baur and Summer passed into animated pirate lingo. It was that day they decided that what the world needed was an international TLAPD.

The two chose September 19 as the official day. For the next seven years, the two prattled off like pirates on this day, and encouraged their buccaneer friends to do the same. TLAPD maintained a low profile until Baur one day came across the email of Miami Herald humor columnist, Dave Barry.

As a nationally syndicated writer and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Barry was the map that would lead to the treasure. The two agreed he would be the perfect national spokesman. They e-mailed him, and much to their surprise, Barry replied and fully advocated their cause. The idea struck gold when Barry constructed the holiday in his column.

The article anchored in the international holiday and the rest is history. To celebrate the "yo-ho" spirit of TLAPD, there are a number of local events available to Fullerton College students.
