Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. The exercise is as old as civilization, but the practice is never outdated.
Bikram Yoga studio in Downtown Fullerton is a small, but clean and welcoming facility, with carpeted floors, high ceiling fans and a large studio mirror.
The yoga studio offers beginning to advanced yoga classes. In each 90-minute session, students with bottled water, yoga mats and towels stretch their bodies into challenging positions in a sweltering 105-degree room. As they are coached through the 26 Bikram poses, they cleanse out their minds and their bodies of deep toxins.
The concept of the studio follows the philosophy of worldwide yoga-master Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury, more commonly known as Bikram. Practicing yoga since the age of four, Bikram founded the Yoga College of India and reigns as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion.
Bikram's series of 26 poses is designed to move freshly oxygenated blood to the body's tissues and organs, curing the body of ailments that range from diabetes to depression. In addition, while new students will most likely feel sore, consistent attendance of classes ultimately aids weight loss, overall muscle tone, good health, and a general sense of well-being.
Joe Vogt opened the Fullerton studio two years ago, after deciding to pursue his passion in holistic heath. Since then, Vogt has built a large clientele of regulars who share in the Bikram lifestyle and philosophy. Vogt describes yoga as a series of physical stances that unlocks a mental perspective. In this holistic approach, students can feel a mind-body connection while practicing Bikram yoga.
As an added benefit to college students, yoga also increases the ability to concentrate. Locking your leg, tightening your abs, breathing regularly are individual focuses. Developing these simple actions allows stressed-out students to achieve a relaxed meditative state. During finals week, reviving this focused state decreases cortisone stress levels as well as increases concentration when studying for tests.
"It brings out more efficiencies in all other aspects of life," Vogt said.
There is a $29 introductory two week special offered for first-timers who want to try out the class. There is also a 20% student discount for most class memberships. In addition to classes, the Bikram Yoga studio also sells a variety of yoga mats, clothing, books and art. For membership information and a schedule of classes, log onto bikramyogoc.com.
