Our country has changed significantly since 9/11. The emotional chaos that gripped our country following that fateful day can still be felt reverberating across these United States. New Yorkers still cringe at the empty skyline left by the towers fall and two bloody wars have been waged as a result.… Post the First Comment

Twin Cinema

Yesterday, Steve Jobs of Apple Computers announced that movies would now be able to be viewed on the iPod. With the excitement of a six-year-old on Christmas morning, I rushed to my computer to see which movie I would be downloading first. Although the idea of how much easier it would be to watch a DVD on my laptop, I couldn't really fit my laptop in my pocket, now could I? After 10 or so failed attempts to log into iTunes' music store (has anyone else EVER been told that the music store was too busy?), I finally succeeded in getting into the new "movies" section.… Post the First Comment

Taking the Low Road

Rebelations
The revelation that you will never be elected to public office or be what some would call an "upstanding citizen" is a harsh reality to wake up to (but only for about a minute). I recently came to the realization that I myself will never be invited to join a country club or be offered the chance to attend the Republican National Convention (not that I would want to).… Post the First Comment

The Patriot Act

The Patriot Act has made the simple act of going to college a dangerous act for Middle Eastern immigrants. If you are a Muslim male between the ages of 17-40 you could be labeled "special interest" by the FBI. This title could earn you an unlimited stay in a detention center or even deportation.… Post the First Comment

Skinny is the New Fat

Between five to ten million women suffer from an eating disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, and contrary to popular belief, I'm not one of them. Acquaintances and strangers alike find it permissible to comment on my weight. Standing at five feet, four inches and weighing anywhere from 99 to 105 pounds, they assume I have an eating disorder.… Post the First Comment

My 9/11

I was 20 years old, residing on the living room floor of a two bedroom apartment in Colorado with six friends on September 11, 2001. That morning, at an hour seemingly earlier than God intended man to awaken, much less have conscious thought, one of my roommates damn near tripped over my snoozing carcass in a sprint to the television, immediately turning my deep sleep into a confused and slightly bitter stare of an abrupt, "better have a damn good reason" awakening.… Post the First Comment

The Cost of Cool

She's only 20, and already she looks like a grandmother. The sweat from the 90 degree heat stings her eyes as her stomach growls. She hasn't been able to eat since six in the morning. The needle of the sewing machine nicks her hand causing her to cry out in pain.… Post the First Comment

Muderous Children

Murder: the unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice. Murder: an act thought only to be committed by psychotic adults. Murder: an act that most people think their loved ones can never be a victim of. Murder: an abhorrent act that most people never think their loved ones are capable of.… 11 Comments

Minimum Wage

We've all had that experience of working a minimum wage job; many of us continue to be used as tools in the corporate game. Do not despair, the feelings of exhaustion and suicidal thoughts that go along with a lengthy day of menial work will be somewhat diminished.… Post the First Comment

Reality Television

Throughout its relatively short history, television has undergone many trends consistent with people's way of life and interests. The 1950's offered shows such as "Leave it To Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" which was scripted and mimicked the breadwinner/homemaker model family popular at the time.… Post the First Comment

"Have the police gone too far with their use of force?"

Today people view police officers in one of two ways, with respect or with fear. Police officers are entrusted with supreme power and at times they tend to misuse it. Excessive force occurs when a police officer uses an amount of force with regard to a civilian that is more then necessary.… 2 Comments

"Have the police gone too far with their use of force?"

The police lately have been in the spotlight for recent brutalities that have taken place, but I think that the public is too quick to assume that the police are overreacting and abusing their power. To be an officer of the law is to have a job that the public automatically has predetermined judgments about the officers.… 1 Comment
