Fullerton Hornets, in their home opener, dominated the Santa Monica Corsairs 44-13 Saturday night, compiling over 600 yards of
total offense.
"We were focused on accomplishing our objectives to have good execution and to have a blend between run and pass," said Hornets coach Bob Moran. "Be able to get various people the football in different situations."
Both teams had some things in common going into the game: both were win-less, both were looking to turn their seasons around after losing their respective season openers; and the two teams possess young players.
Fullerton (1-1) was able to run at will against the Corsairs gaining 458 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Leading the way was last year's Mission Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Joe Chatman, who gained 128 yards on 10 carries, including a 77-yard touchdown run. Chatman returned to action after missing the season opener with a hip injury.
Two freshmen running-backs figured largely into the rushing offense as well. Andrew Herard gained 121 yards on 6 carries, and Kevin Robinson rushed for two touchdowns.
Hornet quarterbacks: Luke Tracy, Kyle Olson, and Ryan Coffelt combined for 249 yards passing and one touchdown.
Santa Monica (0-2), for the second week in a row, has given up over 40 points
a game.
"I just told them that I'm not using the excuse about having 70 freshmen," said Corsair coach Robert Taylor. "I think it will take us a couple of weeks to figure this out."
Santa Monica was only able to drive into Fullerton territory twice in the first half, but both were negated with interceptions. Corsair quarterback Colin Clancy completed 14 of 28 for 116 yards, with no touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Hornets offense committed no turnovers, and scored touchdowns on every possession in the first half to take a commanding 34-0 at halftime.
However, the Corsairs running back John Weaver ran for two scores in the second half, one was a long 46-yard run.
"We played a better spot in the second half." Taylor said. Fullerton, because of their lead, were able to play some of their reserves. Ryan Coffelt, the Hornets third string quarterback, got some action.
"A lot of kids lack college experience that they normally don't get in some of those tight games," said coach Tim Byrnes. "Now we can better evaluate these kids and see who we need to be playing on the football field."
Fullerton looks to retain the key to the county at home Saturday against Santa Ana, a rivalry that dates back to 1916. It will be their first conference game of the season.
