The rivalry between Fullerton and Santa Ana is a long and historic one.It is said that it is the oldest and most celebrated in all of JC football. The rivalry ranks among Cal-Stanford and USC-UCLA for the longest lasting rivalry in the state.
The game Saturday will be the 83rd time these two teams have gone head to head since 1916. This game is also the Hornets first conference game of the year.
These two teams play for a key to the county, which was introduced in 1997, by at that time Fullerton Mayor Chris Norby. The trophy will be turned over to this year's winner.
A key to the county breakfast was held Monday at the Fullerton Marriott. Among those in attendance were: Congresswoman Laura Sanchez-she wore purple to show she was neutral in the rivalry (Fullerton's Blue, Santa Ana's red makes purple), NOCCCD Chancellor Jerome Hunter, Fullerton College President Dr. Kathleen Hodge, Santa Ana College President Erlinda Martinez, both Athletic Directors, and both coaching staffs.
Needless to say, this is a huge rivalry that has huge bragging rights on both sides. Fullerton is looking to hand Santa Ana their first loss, and the Dons look to give the Hornets a losing record. Someone has to got to give.
