Faculty and staff have come together once again for the Art Department Faculty Biennial.

All faculty members are encouraged to participate in the art show, which samples work from disciplines ranging from painting and ceramics to sculptures and graphic design.

The art show is limited to faculty art only and aims at showing students and the community the kind of art coming out of FC, stated Museum Studies major Dave McIntosh.

While some instructors work in their discipline, others use the show to display another facet of their work to their students.

"We hope this exhibition to show that the art faculty are creative artists working outside of their teaching obligations," said Gallery Director Kate Johnson.

Art instructor Nanci Schreiber-Smith teaches the Stained Glass Class but submitted two paintings on Greek mythology: "Narcisus" and "Pandora at the Temple of Athena." She said she thinks it's good for students to see what their faculty can do aside from what they teach.

Ceramics instructor Daniel Pope created an installation piece, "Bags with Zippers."
McIntosh said an installation piece is when an artist brings in outside objects and creates a sculpture.

Pope's piece is a collection of bags with zippers hanging from a wall with an explanatory note hanging along with them. Pope revisited a piece he did for a previous Faculty Biennial and modified it. Pope is one artist who created a piece for the Faculty Biennial but other artists submit pieces from their collections or from previous gallery showings.

Department Chair Deborah Davidson is constantly creating work because she also shows her work at the Sue Greenwood Fine Art gallery in Laguna Beach. She teaches painting and worked in her medium contributing two paintings: "Mother's Birthday" and "Commingle."

"It's a great outreach for students to see what instructors so," said Davidson, "and to see if there's an instructor they want to work with in the future."

Art instructor Jim Dowdalls said he feels it is important for students to see what they do, as it directly relates to their classroom teaching; particularly relating to making a career in art.
Former student Jasmine Boonkrong attended the gallery opening. She said the relationship inside the classroom is different and it is cool to see the instructors work. "It's awesome," said Boonkrong. "You get to see their point of view outside of the classroom."

The Faculty Biennial is held every two years and alternates with the FC Permanent Art Collection exhibition, according to Johnson. This year's exhibit will continue through Sept. 25th. "The Disenchanted Forest" is the next exhibit from outside artist Daniel du Plessis and will run October 5-26
