Sidney's Café is located on Wilshire Avenue off of Harbor Boulevard in historic Downtown Fullerton. This quaint little café is one of few vegetarian and vegan-style restaurants in Orange County. Owner Sandy Sauers named the restaurant after her late pet dog Sidney. From the moment you walk inside, it is apparent how much the dog influenced Sauers in the creation of this establishment.
This modernly decorated café makes you feel very comfortable as if you are at your very own home. The motif includes figurines and pictures of dogs all over the walls. There is even a gift section where you can purchase picture frames, note pads, coffee mugs, journals, cards, and nick-nacks.
The goal of Sidney's Café is to offer great tasting vegan and vegetarian food. They offer daily starters like homemade granola, weekend breakfast, sandwiches, soup, salads, dinner, and sweets. Everything on their menu can be prepared vegan style upon request. The difference between vegetarians and vegans is that vegetarians do not eat flesh foods and vegans don't eat or consuming animal products (ie. eggs, fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetic products tested on animals).
The staff at Sidney's was friendly and happy to answer any questions about the menu and vegan food. Many items on the menu such as the "Not-Chicken Salad Sandwich" are made out of soy or tofu. Soy is a traditional part of the Japanese diet. The soy bean has had many uses in China for thousands of years. Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk, and the pressing the resulting curds into blocks.
"Tofu is so versatile. You can do a lot with it. It's high in protein and a good source of calcium," said Sidney's associate Adam Brown.
Some of the most popular items on the menu are the Southwest Grilled Cheese, Not-Meat-Loaf, Not-Chicken Quesadilla, and the Chocolate Cheesecake. Being one of the few vegetarian/vegan style restaurants in Orange County, Sidney's has many regulars. People from all parts of Orange County travel to this Fullerton establishment to enjoy the food. On Saturday and Sunday, the café is open from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. and only serves breakfast, offering their weekend regulars items such as, tofu scramble, pancakes with soy sausage, French toast, and muffins.
In December, Sidney's Café will celebrate its two-year anniversary. This café offers a variety of choices for both vegans and non-vegans. Sidney's is a restaurant that everyone should experience at least once, even if you don't practice a vegan lifestyle.
