After four straight road matches to start the season the Hornets opened two matches at home. First, they were pounded by Pasadena 30-10, 30-16, 30-12, then thumped by Citrus 30-19, 30-22, 30-22.
Going into Friday night's game the Hornets had won four in a row and Citrus was coming off a loss to the same El Camino team that handed the Hornets its only loss thus far. Perhaps a deciding factor for the Citrus victory.
"Last night we had a really bad loss to El Camino," said Owls Head Coach Tammy Silva. "Then we came in fired up and had intensity."
Citrus (3-1) had some heavy hitters, leading the attack was outside hitter Kelly Fink who led the owls with 22 kills. Libero Stephanie Gautier led the way on defense with 12 digs.
Fullerton (4-2) was never in the match, and had a rough time finding points.
"We just didn't get any rhythm with our offense," said Hornets Head Coach Eddie Rapp. "With our passing, followed by our setting."
Citrus dominated play in every facet of the match.
"They just outplayed us," Rapp said. "They outplayed us in defense, in block, and execution."
However, it was a different outcome for the Hornets Wednesday night, Fullerton needed only 55 minutes to beat Pasadena. Outside hitter Gina Conley led the team in kills with 10, libero Rochelle Wylie had 12 digs.
The Hornets also participated in the preview tournament hosted by Santa Ana Saturday. The team was solid in pool play making it to the playoffs.Fullerton defeated Cerritos 30-19 in the quarterfinals with help from outside hitter Chris Nihipali's 10 kills and setter Katie Adams contributed with 9 assists.
In the semi-final round, the Hornets were sent packing in a close match 30-28 by Orange Coast.
Fullerton hits the road once again taking on Mt. Sac Wednesday in its only game of the week.
