The International Student Center's five-year anniversary came with a bittersweet note: Director, Jessie Blank, will be leaving FC to pursue her master's degree at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Blank planned to further her studies by going to graduate school in the fall of 2007 when opportunity knocked at her door.
"I was planning to go to graduate school next fall… and this happened to fall into my lap," she stated. "[Northwestern] offered me a job and to pay my tuition. What are you going to do?"
Blank used her time and experience at FC as foundations on which to build. "[FC] has prepared me for a lot of challenges within my profession and within higher education," she explained.
According to Blank, working at FC has helped her find the focus required to undertake and achieve her goals. "It's given me perspective on how to advise students and how to best help students. I've had a breath of experience [at FC]… with every challenge you develop a new skill," said Blank.
She plans to get her master's degree in Learning and Organizational Change in order to fulfill her dreams.
"My passion right now is [working] with college-age students and adults throughout their education. I'm really interested in the adult development. I don't think it ends at adolescence or ends at college. I really think it keeps going. Fullerton College opened up my eyes to community college as a sector of American education," Blank explained.
As the day progressed staff and students dropped by to say hello and goodbye as Blank went about her day.
For new international students like Indonesian Maya Kusnadi, business major, on her first semester at FC the help she's received from Blank and her staff have made an impression on her. "They are so nice… they've been fabulous. I'm going to miss Jessie," she said.
Blank confessed that what she'll miss the most from FC is the friendships she forged with staff and students. "I'm going to miss the people… the students and the people I work with," Blank said.
