The Gauchos high-powered offense proved too much for host Fullerton last Saturday night in a 48-16 blowout.
Saddleback has tilted the scoreboards this season, racking up 160 points in its first four games, with an average of points 40 a game. Saturday was no exception.
The Gauchos (4-0, 1-0) wasted no time when running back Andrew Nikihei returned the opening kickoff 45 yards to midfield. One play later, running back Robbie DuBois, who is second all-time in Orange County for the single season rushing record in high school with 2,726 yards (DeShaun Foster, 3,395), broke a 51-yard touchdown run. Saddleback struck first 7-0.
DuBois led the team in rushing with 82 yards on six carries, and one score.
All Fullerton could do was sit and watch the points go up on the board.
It was 17-0, and into the second quarter, before the Hornets (1-3) answered with a 28-yard touchdown scamper by running back Joe Chatman. Chatman totaled 97 yards on 18 rushes and one touchdown.
Fullerton would not score again until the fourth quarter on a 46-yard touchdown grab by wide receiver Marquis Avery, who led the team with four catches for 140 yards. Ray Magee also had over a hundred yards in the game.
The rest was all Gauchos, which had 483 yards of total offense. Saddleback quarterback Nick Nelson led the way going 12 of 18, for 222 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was wide receiver Maurice Clark, who had five catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
The Hornets had two more fumbles Saturday, bringing the total to 10 lost fumbles on the year and the turnover margin to -4.
Saddleback, who started the game ranked No. 2 in Southern California, will play Mt. SAC Saturday who was No. 3. Mt. SAC beat No. 1 ranked El Camino 42-39. So it will likely be Saddleback playing Mt. Sac for the top spot in Southern California region.
Fullerton, ranked 17, will try to regroup on the road at Golden West on Saturday, before its first conference game against Pasadena on October 14
