The Lady Hornets managed a 1-1 tie against Saddleback on Friday afternoon. The latest game has left the Hornets record at 2-4-1 (1-2-1 in OEC). Fullerton split the game equally between both keepers again, as they have in all games, except one thus far this season. Antonia Hinojos stopped both shots she faced while she was in net, and Emily Tielrooy stopped all but 1 of the 3 shots she faced. Coach Pam Lewin sees both goaltenders as viable options, because each brings a differant strength to the goalie position.
Saddleback came out strong. Tegan Maertz opened the scoring in minute 15, but Fullerton was able to hold off the Gauchos for the rest of the first half, and entirely in the second. Jessica Castillo scored the only goal for Fullerton, again edifying how needed she is on the Lady Hornets team. The goal came almost too late, in minute 87, but it proved to be just in time.
Castillo, Monique Moreira, and Amanda Phillips, all freshman, have accounted for 32 of the teams 43 points so far this season. Castillo has 5 goals, Phillips has 4 goals, while Moreira has 3. Stefani Orr also has 2 goals for the Lady Hornets.
Fullerton will need excellent play from both goalies and the rest of the team on Friday when they face conference rival Golden West 1-7-0 (0-4-0 in OEC). However, Golden West has only scored 2 goals, while they have 36 goals against. With 32 points spread between three players, a goal or two from the Lady Hornets should be expected.
