From West Coast Swing to the Lindy Hop, Memories is a great Uptown Whittier Swing Club.
Located at 12901 Philadelphia St., Memories stands tall as it proudly displays its ambiance through its "second generation" building.
The original location of Memories was in the City of Anaheim, but was closed down due to corporate upsizing, and El Pollo Loco buying the building. Forced out of their original home, owners John and Kevin Crist found the current location only months after and 20 miles away.
Memories, as it now stands, has been in the same 100-year-old building since August 10, 2001. The new location's first floor dance floor is actually 750 square feet of the original Memories' flooring. The upper level dance floor is the original flooring of the current building and gives home to the 2,400 square foot grand ballroom dance floor.
Over the years, Memories has evolved and changed with the times, adding in new ideas and classes as the demand grew.
This establishment offers a six-week course for beginners on either Sunday or Monday nights. The course, "Beyond the Basics," takes one through the basic fundamentals of swing dancing as well as teaches style and how to combine six and eight count rhythms. No partner is needed for this course and all ages are welcomed. Lee Kersten is lead by Essex Lina when teaching the swing classes at Memories.
Other types of dance to be taught during a six-week course are Balboa and Lindy Hop.
The Balboa Series does not require any prior knowledge of dance skills. On the other hand, the Lindy Hop Series has different levels one must advance through, and then audition for the last level. Memories offers other types of dances throughout the year.
Each Friday night both floors are open for dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with a cover charge of $10. Memories does their best in having live bands for each "open dance" session held. Before the swinging starts, dance lessons are held on each floor for only $8. Beginning classes are held on the lower floor and advanced on the upper. Lessons start at 7:30 p.m.
