The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is hosting a Walk to Cure Diabetes this Sunday, October 8, at the Craig Regional Park off north State College Blvd. Check-in and on-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m.
By participating in the Walk, one will be joining half a million people in 200 locations in raising funds to impact the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes. The money raised goes towards JDRF funded research, which will help those struggling with the disease to enjoy living healthier, longer lives.
Those who choose not to walk can still participate in the all-day event. The family-friendly event includes activities for adults and kids, including a variety of food, a slide and a bounce-house.
Type 1 diabetes is also called "juvenile diabetes" because it typically strikes early in childhood. A reported three million Americans have type 1 diabetes. In this type of diabetes, the body fails to produce insulin, which is needed to take sugar from the blood to the cells. As a result, hypoglycemia, low blood glucose can result, creating further complications such as heart failure, kidney damage and blindness. The average juvenile diabetic's life is cut short by 10 to 15 years. The condition is one that must be managed on a daily basis.
"Juvenile diabetes is especially important because it affects kids everyday," stated Andrea Dodson, a local representative for the JDRF Orange County Chapter. "It's also good to get involved in your community and this is a walk that's offered in Fullerton. It does have an effect on the community."
Co-workers, friends, family or individual walkers can register online or show up on-site. There is no registration fee. If one cannot participate in this particular walk, there are more opportunities spread out in other JDRF chapters around Southern California. To participate in any of these events or to find other ways to support this cause, visit the JDRF website at jdrf.org.
