is well under way, and more projects are already in the planning stages.
The Lemon Street parking structure opened May 25. Although concrete was finished in January, minor problems held up the rest of the project. Despite some technicalities, the structure was completed well before the fall 2006 class sessions. It contains 1,404 parking spaces, four levels, and two elevators.
According to Janet Portolan, Vice President of Educational Support, the structure is lit about halfway during the day, fully during night classes, and "safely" from midnight to five a.m.
"We want it to feel safe, be safe," Portolan said.
After the campus commons building is finished, the next major step in construction on the FC campus will be a new two-story classroom and office building.
Slated to begin construction in November, the new building will contain many faculty offices, the Social Science Office, a new reading lab, a social science lab, and a large lecture hall.
This new building will be close to the library, and campus administrators hope that it will attract students in the same way.
A physical education project is also in the works for FC, but it is currently only in the planning stages. These plans include a new 50 meter swimming pool, a new football field with artificial turf, a field house, and bleachers.
Improvement in the gym and dance facilities are also planned, along with resurfacing of the tennis courts, and a remodeling
project for the 200 building.
Construction on the campus commons building is proceeding as planned, and the results are easy to see.
"Watch how fast it goes," Portolan said, "All the steel should be up by [the end of] September."
Aside from the new cafeteria and dining facilities, the campus commons building is scheduled to contain Student Services, Associated Students, the Student Center, the International Student Center, the Cadena Transfer Center, and more.
"It's going to be an attractive place to be," Portolan said. It's easy to see the excitement about the project, which will contain many of the architectural features of the new library.
"We'll be looking forward to something more spacious," Portolan said. "I think it's going to be a place where students want to go."
