Fullerton is a college-based city, priding itself in arts and creativity. America for the Arts recently conducted their third survey across the US, including Fullerton, in order to find out how the arts affect the economy. They polled 156 regions, including cities and counties, in all 50 states. A total of 49 organizations were asked to participate in Fullerton and twenty-one returned the surveys.

Roughly $69 million in economic activity was produced in Fullerton last year. Sixty million came from spending by arts and organizations. The remaining $9 million was the costs individuals spend, not including admission prices to art and cultural attractions.

The survey broke it down further, stating on average, a person in Fullerton spends $25.84 on things such as hotels, parking, refreshments and souvenirs.

Forty-nine percent of the revenue produced is by local residents, and 51% is from people visiting Fullerton. With a population of 133,000 residents, Fullerton supports 1,349 full-time jobs and generates $4.14 million in revenue for its local government.

"Fullerton's present and future success is profoundly tied to the success of its arts and culture organizations. The art industry fuels creativity and innovation. An arts-centered environment retains and attracts residents and employees," said Susan L. Petrella, chairwoman of the Fullerton Arts Committee.

The next step is to form a Fullerton Arts Council, which will insure the continuous growth of Fullerton. Tuesday, September 18 will be the first city council meeting where the results of this survey will be addressed and the beginning of the process to establish the Fullerton Arts Council will start.

Bob Rhein, former Hornet editor believes this will bring tremendous developments to Fullerton. "With the two colleges, Cal State and FC, STAGES, the theatre, and other great venues, the city of Fullerton will grow into the numbers and in 10 years, when another survey is conducted [the numbers] will be extreme."
