The men's soccer team has yet to lose a game. The most recent game, on Friday, the Hornets (3-0-2) played an away game against Mira Costa College winning 2-0. Sophomore Andy Garcia and freshman Andres Morillon scored the goals with an assist from freshman Julio Melgoza.
"I like the team. There's good team unity, and they're good students," said Head Coach Scott Giles of the new men's soccer team.
With six returning players, Giles is "very pleased" with how the team looks. The coach's feelings about the team are based on hard evidence. The game against San Bernardino on last Wednesday was a victory, 3-1. One goal was scored yet again by Garcia with two goals made by freshman Christian Meza.
The two games against Long Beach last Tuesday and El Camino August 31 were ties 0-0 and 2-2. Giles admits that he was "disappointed they didn't win against El Camino", but the team "played really hard" against Long Beach. The first game that they played was against Glendale College, on August 27, and they won 2-0. Even though these contests are not Conference games, they are still important.
This season, the Hornets will have nine tough non-conference games, which will help
them prepare for their Conference opponents. The first Conference game will be on Tuesday, September 25, against the team's biggest rival, Santa Ana College. The
Conference is very competitive and there will be challenging games against Irvine Valley College, Cypress College, and a few of the other schools in the Orange Empire
Conference.
Despite Giles' confidence in his team, the players are not the only people that make the team go. "One man can't do it all." said Giles about himself.
There are a lot of people that help with running the team, people such as the Assistant Coach, Alex Perez, and a supportive Athletic Department.
Overall, Giles is "excited about the season" because of all the hard work and preparation that the team has put in. This means that there is a great possibility that the men's soccer team will be highly competitive. The next game that the men's soccer team plays is a home game on Friday against Pasadena College.
