The women's soccer team gave a gritty effort but fell short at Mt. SAC on September 4, losing to the Mounties by a 7-2 margin.
The superior pace and passing of the home side, along with shaky goalkeeping early by Fullerton, were the stories of the match. The Mounties took an early lead on a Falisha Ramirez goal set up by a well placed cross into the box in the 5th minute. Poor handling of a corner by the Hornet keeper put Fullerton down 2-0 a few minutes later.
Ramirez made it 3-0 in the 18th minute, firing a rebound into the back of the net after a Grecia Vargas shot was rebuffed. Another goalie error on a free kick sent the Hornets into halftime trailing by four. The Mounties, to their credit, played a sound first half, with midfielder Veronica Wilhelm making some nice runs down the right wing. Hornet sweeper Monica "Mo" Moreira was a one-woman army on defense, rushing about to make clearances and challenging encroaching Mountie players.
After falling behind 6-0, the visitors were finally able to sustain some pressure on the home team. Rachel Lopez got the Hornets on the board, and Amanda Phillips sunk home a penalty to narrow the deficit to four after a foul on Juri King. Another Mountie goal concluded the scoring, with Fullerton playing hard until the final whistle.
The Hornets are 0-3 after the loss, after losing to Moorpark and El Camino College by
scores of 6-0 and 4-0 previously. Head Coach Pamela Lewin was pleased the team broke their scoring drought.
"I was happy we finally scored a couple of goals," Lewin said. "Mount SAC is a tough
team."
With only five sophomores on the roster, the Hornets figure to experience growing pains early in the season. Lewin admits the team is still coming together as a unit as they head into the September 11 conference opener at Riverside College.
"We're getting off to a slow start," she said. "A lot of players haven't played together. We're trying to see what the lineup will be. Trying to find a lineup that works with our strengths. They were able to take advantage of it."
To shore up the defense, Moreira was moved into the sweeper role after playing forward last season. Lewin had praise for the team co-captain.
"She's a great athlete and an even better team player," Lewin said.
