The Hornets got off to a good start in Orange Empire Conference play with a tie and win in their first two conference games.
Amanda Phillips scored twice and Jori King netted her first goal of the season in Fullerton's 3-3 draw at Orange Coast College (0-4-1, 0-1-1) Friday.
Phillips leads Fullerton (1-3-1,
1-0-1) in scoring with 4 goals.
Last Tuesday, the Hornets outlasted host Riverside 3-2 to win their conference opener. A late Phillips goal concluded the scoring in a give-and-take affair.
All the scoring in the Riverside game took place in the second half, but there was no shortage of chances for either team in the first 45 minutes.
Tiger forward Aubrey Hagerty was a pesky presence, forcing a point-blank save from Fullerton goalkeeper Briana Magana and later making a nice run down the wing to set up an overeager Leslie de la Trinidad, who was ruled offside.
Riverside keeper Shannon Kendrick easily handled a Kimmi Walsh corner on the other end. Phillips had a chance on a
counterattack after a corner, but shot wide of goal. Both teams seemed unhappy to enter the half goalless.
A hard challenge on Hagerty by defender Kim Figueroa resulted in a successful penalty kick for a 1-0 Riverside lead. Figueroa's foul resulted in a red card for
the freshman.
Walsh soon equalized, firing the ball past Kendrick after breaking free with a long pass from mid-fielder Kenya Torres. Walsh put Fullerton ahead 2-1 minutes later, after a Rachel Lopez ball found her lurking near the Tiger left post.
Riverside (0-5, 0-1) evened the score after the Hornets failed to clear a corner batted down by Magana.
After Phillips added her second goal of the season, the Hornets held on for the win.
"It was pretty sweet," Walsh said of the game. "The second half was a lot better. I think we were trying harder."
The real test for the Lady Hornets will begin on Thursday against the Chaffey Panthers (6-1-1) in a non-confernce match at home. Fullerton will resume conference play against Santiago Canyon (7-0) on Tuesday.
