California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the state budget, which allocated funds for operating community colleges.
The fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30, 2008. The state budget was signed on August 24 later than usual . The North Orange County Community College District is anticipating $166 million in revenue this current fiscal year.
The amount is determined by the growth in the number of enrolled full time students. Fullerton College generates close to 50 percent of enrolled full-time students in the N.O.C.C.D.
Nearly half of the district budget will go to FC. The money has been allocated, but not yet received.
This year's budget is 5.3 percent greater than last year's.
"I believe that given the state of the economy, this was a pretty reasonable budget for a community college and we will be able to serve our students satisfactorily with that allocation," said Adam O'Connor, Director of Budget and Finance.
According to O'Connor, 94% is appropriated for staffing and benefits.
The remaining 6 percent is used to pay for the expenses needed to operate the campus such as the electric bill and air conditioning. Supplies such as chalk and toilet paper are also covered by this 6 percent.
The budget includes $285,000 for instructional equipment such as microscopes, computers and projectors. This is the first year that money has been set aside in the budget for solely technical equipment.
"We did not think this allocation will include money for only instructional equipment other than supplies for student use," O'Connor said.
It has not yet been determined how this money will be spent.
