A game with struggling Golden West (1-9) was just what the doctor ordered for the ailing Hornet women's soccer team.
Playing without co-captain Monica Moreira (torn quadricep), starting goalie Briana
Magana (chest contusion), and defender Kim Figueroa, Fullerton (2-6-1, 2-2-1) still
prevailed with a 5-3 victory over the Rustlers Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game at Fullerton.
The forward tandem of Amanda Phillips and Kimmi Walsh wreaked havoc on the Golden West defense, with each player netting a goal and routinely getting past the Rustler fullback corps.
"These two played fantastic today," said Hornet coach Pamela Lewin after the game.
Both players came close to scoring multiple goals. A Walsh first half shot bounced off the crossbar, and a later Phillips line drive was stopped by Rustler keeper Elyse Trujillo.
Fullerton took the lead barely a minute into the game, after Rachel Lopez raced down the left wing and crossed to an open Walsh who made the most of the opportunity.
The Rustlers soon equalized, with the Hornets going up 2-1 on an own goal by Golden West defender Riana Bakhos. With her team under pressure, the freshman botched a clearance, lobbing the ball into her own net.
Fullerton opened the second half with a flurry of goals. Phillips scored early, with Lopez making it 4-1 soon after with an arcing shot from outside the 18 yard box.
Kenya Torres, the team's playmaker in midfield, added her first goal of the season to increase the Hornets lead to 4. Golden West made it 5-2 after Yesennia Ocampo poked the ball past Hornet goalie Alison Sheely on a Jean Escobar assist.
The Rustlers added a goal on a penalty kick after a questionable call against the Hornet's Lindsay Valero. Valero was knocked over by a Rustler player on a 50-50 ball just inside the Fullerton penalty area. Though it appeared the Golden West player had charged into Valero, the referee signaled for a penalty.
It was one of a number of dubious decisions by the official, who seemed reluctant to take out the yellow card on some questionable Rustler challenges.
"They got very physical," Phillips said after the match. "We kept our heads in the game and stayed smart." Magana expects to return to action this week.
Moreira said she should be back for the October 9 game with Cypress.
Phillips' goal was her fifth of the season. The sophomore leads the team in scoring, followed by Walsh with 4 this year.
Last Tuesday Fullerton lost against Santiago Canyon in a match that they would rather forget. The Hawks (11-0-0, 6-0-0) totally dominated the Hornets throughout the game, demonstrating why they are No. 2 in the State just under American River.
The Hornets will play Santa Ana College (2-5-2) this Friday at Fullerton. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
