Fullerton College boasts a diverse student body, and as such there are a number of
different clubs on campus that represent the interests and backgrounds of various types of students.

Lambda Society is one such club, and it is committed to providing support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight communities of FC and educating people concerning the realities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life.

October 11 marks National Coming Out Day, and Lambda Societies across the nation will be celebrating the event October 8-12.

This year's theme is "Talk About It." The goal is to get people from all walks of life to share their views on homosexuality in today's society.

This year also marks an important anniversary, as 2007's National Coming Out Day falls on the 20th anniversary of the 1987 Gay and Lesbian March on Washington and the unveiling of the AIDS Quilt.

National Coming Out Day was celebrated a year to the day after the 1987 Gay and Lesbian March as a way of continuing the camaraderie and visibility that the march and the AIDS Quilt presentation inspired.

"20 years ago, as the AIDS crisis was raging, coming out was literally a matter of life and death," said Mark Shields, director of the Human Rights Campaign's Coming Out Project. "In many ways, we have come a very long way in a relatively short time, and yet that lesson still resonates deeply today. Coming out and living openly is the most important thing that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight-supportive Americans can do to build lasting understanding and equality."

FC's Lambda chapter will be participating in the National Coming Out Day celebration as well, and campus activities have been planned for the entire week.

Monday, October 8 focused on issues such as the question of whether or not homosexuality is a choice, gay marriage and parenting and homosexual hate crimes. Tuesday, October 7 focused on promoting Lambda Society and giving prospective members sign-up information.
