Students, Staff Motivate Latinos in Higher Education
Faculty learns tools for increasing Latino college access and success.

Fullerton College sent 20 staff members and students to the fourth annual Tomás Rivera Policy Institute Education Conference at the Long Beach Convention Center on Monday.
Faculty from EOPS, Financial Aid, Counseling, Health Care, Social Sciences, Student Services and Admissions and Records were in attendance.
The "Practical Tools to Increase Latino College Access and Success" conference featured over 75 speakers and presenters along with more than 500 educators presenting research and proposals for ensuring the success of Latino students in higher education.
"I'm optimistic that we will learn, get motivated, and come back with practical ideas to help improve Latino Access and Success at Fullerton College," said Peter Fong, Interim Vice President of Student Services.
According to the Latino Students and Parent Experience, the earlier Latinos are given access to higher education the better. Often times Latino parents are motivated to improve their children's situation but simply don't know how. There were various workshops offered at the conference.
During the Utilizing Multimedia in College Information Campaigns workshop a 14 minute instructional DVD on how to get into college was played in Spanish with English subtitles. The language barrier has been an obstacle for Latinos families trying to learn about college.
"The idea is to build energy from conference and keep the momentum at Fullerton," Fong said.
Those who attended the conference will be discussing what they learned and how they will apply it to Fullerton College in a meeting today.
