Lars Lindstrome (Ryan Gosling) is a very introverted guy and seems to have an empty, sentimental life, until the day he makes a mysterious meeting on the internet with Bianca.

The day Lars decides to present Bianca, to his brother, Gus (Paul Schneider) and his wife, Karin (Emily Mortimer) they are stunned by Bianca, who is going to be part of the family now. Their reactions aren't due to Bianca having a weird mutation, or that she is incredibly ugly; they are stunned because Bianca isn't a real person…she's a doll.

None of Lars' friends or family can believe that he is treating a life-size doll as a real person. Worried, his friends and family decide to consult the family doctor. The doctor tells them that they should play the game by treating her as Lars does. Lars' circle is going to adopt the same attitude with the inanimate friend.

The cast composed of not very well-known actors, is very well chosen; the actors perfectly fit their roles. The recognizable Gosling is the most impressive and he makes it so real that sometimes the audience truly believe that he believes in whathe says.

This is the first role for Gosling in which he could truly display his acting capabilities. It wasn't until 2006's "Half Nelson," that Gosling was able to obtain and nail serious acting roles.

Mortimer, as Lars's sister-in-law, plays a great character in the film. She plays the perfect in-love wife, who would support her husband in any situation. As stunned as they both are at Lars' behavior, they do react very differently.

Karin's calm and ability to make the best of a bad solution balances out Gus in revolt and spiral into desperation, thinking his brother became crazy. Mortimer brings warmth to Karin's character and has the "woman's touch" in caring for her brother-in-law's craziness and supporting her husband through the situation.

The story is different and really makes the movie good. , Writer Nancy Oliver, who wrote the HBO series, "Six Feet Under," did a great job with the creativeness of the plot. All the roles were perfectly casted and well played, which makes the audience feel as if they're apart of the weird and unexpected world of Lars.

Just want to point out that Mr. Gosling has obtained and nailed serious acting role prior to Half Nelson. In 2001, he was the protagonist in the movie "The Believer", which won the Grand Prize in that year's Sundance Festival and his role in the movie earned him tons of praises. (Continued…)
