With two losses, October did not start very well for the women's volleyball team, but they trained hard and clearly found their powerful play. On Friday, the Lady Hornets played against Santa Ana in the South gym and defeated their adversary in just over an hour in three straight sets (30-11, 30-25, 30-19).
In the first set, the Lady Hornets clearly dominated the court, after 10 minutes the score was already 10-4. They were reactive, aggressive and did everything they had to do to win points. In the middle of the set, Fullerton (10-3, 3-2) took seven straight points, leaving no chance to come back. The Dons could not keep up with the play and only took 11 points from the Lady Hornets, who closed the set with a score of 30-11.
Freshman middle blocker Leah Haproff had 9 kills in the match and 15 total attempts. "I had energy and was pretty aggressive up to the net," Haproff said. Even though the Lady Hornets also took the second set, it was not as easy as the first one. Indeed, Santa Ana (3-7, 0-5) woke up and made things more difficult for their opponent. They responded more aggressively to whatever Fullerton threw at them, and they in turn took seven points in a row.
But this was not enough to win the set, much less challenge the Lady Hornets, who ran away with the second set 30-25.
"Fullerton is a very balanced team, they did not make too many unforced errors and had a lot more power than we do" said Santa Ana Head Coach Troy Abbey after the match. "I don't think we were as good as we should have [been] defensively, and [Fullerton] controlled the match very well."
During the third and final set of the match, the Dons did not give up. They fought back, and at one point came to trail by only 5 points. But one more time, the Lady Hornets were stronger and their play more cohesive, which allowed them to take the third set with a score of 30-19.
Thompson also finished the game with 9 kills and 23 total attempts. Monique Rodriguez and Gina Conley both ended with 6 kills and 15 total attempts, while setter Katie Adams tallied 39 assists herself.
