It's far from the most prestigious win in Hornets history, but it was a win nonetheless.
Fullerton escaped with a home-away victory against Golden West 23-15 Saturday night at LeBard Stadium. The win gives the Hornets their fifth triumph of the season, matching their total from a season ago. Last year Fullerton finished the year 5-5, this season it has already reached 5 wins in just 6 games thus far.
It took the Hornets a quarter and a half to get going, but when they did, they scored
twice to jump out in front of the Rustlers early.
After runs of 12 and 10-yards by Hornets running back Brandon Edwards, Fullerton came alive.
Hornets quarterback Kyle Olson went on to complete three consecutive passes, capped by the man who started it all, Edwards. On an end around, Edwards found the open field and scurried 18 yards, when he dove into the end zone for the first score of the game.
Just about three minutes later, Fullerton would strike again.
On the ensuing drive, Golden West quarterback Les Obie was intercepted by defensive back Lee Aguirre. His fourth interception ties for the lead in the Mission Conference. The Hornets (5-1, 1-0) would make Obie pay for his mistake.
Olson hit wide receiver Marquis Avery with a pass, and after some key blocks Avery made it down to the Rustlers' 7-yard line before he was brought down.
"Oh yeah, my lineman give good blocks, I love them for that," Avery said. "I plan on
taking them out to dinner."
Avery was the Hornets leading receiver Friday night with 8 catches for 132 yards.
"Honestly, half of it was me and the other half was Kyle [Olson], but I was just trying to find as many openings as I could," Avery said. "If I found a hole, I would stay in it or if it closed up, I would go to a new one."
On the next play Olson connected with wide receiver Robert Archuleta on a 7-yard touchdown pass. The score gave the Hornets a 14-0 lead well into the second quarter.
