A scheduling mix-up made the struggling Riverside Tigers a late arrival for Friday afternoon's game with the Hornets at Fullerton.

They should have never got on the bus.

The Hornets dominated the overmatched Tigers en route to a 5-1 victory in a rematch of their September Orange Empire Conference opener.

Fullerton needed a late goal to get past the Tigers 3-2 in an earlier meeting this season, but since then the teams have headed in different directions.

The Hornets (4-7-2, 4-3-2) have won 3 of their past 5 games, while Riverside has lost 6 straight (1-11-1, 1-7-1).

It didn't take long for Fullerton to get on the board. Amanda Phillips put the Hornets up 1-0 in the fifth minute, after Kimmi Walsh found her in the box with a pass from near the left touchline.

Phillips added her second goal 11 minutes later, and it looked like it may be a tough afternoon for the Tigers.

It was Walsh who scored the team's third goal, knocking in a rebound after a Phillips shot hit the post.

Kenya Torres' free kick from the left side went over the Riverside keeper to put Fullerton up 4-0 before the half, and the game was "in the refrigerator" as the late Chick Hearn would say. Victory well in hand, the Hornets appeared to take their foot off the gas in the second half.

Riverside mustered a little pressure, and their perseverance was rewarded with a late goal by Leslie de la Trinidad.

The final whistle blew soon after, and Fullerton had extended its home unbeaten streak to 3 games.

"I think we're just gonna keep getting better and better," said a pleased Hornet Head Coach Pamela Lewin after the game. "It kinda took us half the season to get to know each other. It's nice to see Kimmi and Cliffy [Phillips] working together at the top. That's what you want out of two forwards in the 4-4-2 formation. I thought our defense tightened it up. It's nice to have Monique (Moreira) back to play sweeper. She's so fast."

Moreira, a team co-captain, missed four games with a torn quadricep. The sophomore seemed back to her old self, racing to make some tough challenges on Riverside attackers.

"Get the ball the hell out of there, that's my method. I'm a beast again," the bashful
Moreira said after the match.

Earlier in the week, the Hornets didn't fare so well at powerful Cypress (11-1-3, 7-1-1), losing 6-1. Lewin said a bad start hindered the team's performance.

"Cypress scored in the third and fourth minutes, that makes it difficult to play," Lewin said.

The Hornets play Saddleback College (6-7-1, 4-4-1) on their campus Friday at 3 p.m., in another conference game. Striker Ashley Novak leads their team with 4 goals.
