With Halloween coming, "30 Days of Night" is certainly topical. The movie based on the graphic novel brings a new kind of vampire to life in this horror flick.

Every year the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska, is plunged into complete darkness for 30 days. The residents are used to it and, one more time get ready to spend the next month in the dark, but this year things are going to be different.

A band of vampires who are forced to live at night (otherwise they are destroyed by the light of the sun), decide to take advantage of the situation by targeting the remote town to feed themselves on the helpless residents.

Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George, "Turistas") and a bunch of citizens will do everything they can to survive the 30 days of dark until daylight.

The fact that the majority of the movie happens at night, and that there is no way to find help anywhere else make the ambiance even more tense.

Hartnett, usually cast in comedies and romantic leads (because of his good looks), had the opportunity to take on a different kind of character. He is the one who has to be brave, strong and lead the action and did it very well.

George, as the Sheriff Eben estranged wife, Stella, was great even if her performance did not stand out. Her character is strong and sensible at the same time.

Danny Huston takes on the role of the leader of the vampires, Marlow and his performance is quite amazing. All the vampires were actually good, their primary goal was to be scary and they completely fulfilled it.

They are vampires, but at the same time look human which make them real, but some details such as their teeth and eyes make them realistically scary.

Being only Director David Slade's third feature film, he created a good movie by bringing the vampire genre back to its roots.

This is a great horror film, the audience feels directly involved in it and those who like to be scared will definitely enjoy it.

I have the pleasure of knowing the creator/writer of the "30 Days of Night" comics and was honored to see it on film. I thought it was well done and loved, just like the comics, how the vampires had more of a classic vampire look rather than your typical Angel or Spike look to them. (Continued…)
