The Fullerton College Library was selected to receive a grant in the amount of $15,000 from the Verizon Foundation.
Verizon Director Mike Murray presented the grant to the college on Friday at the Verizon Reception held in the Library at 1 p.m.
Murray spoke at the reception and expressed how awarding the college with this grant was a "great pleasure. "
According to Murray, "It is very difficult to qualify for the grant because of the tough competition and the economy. This is why non-profit organizations are very important. "
The Fullerton College Foundation, an organization that raises scholarships and grants for student success, is a required to apply for the grant.
"The Fullerton College Foundation is one of the top 10 in the country," said Murray. "The application was well written and presented a problem and a solution. We were pretty much sold."
Murray has been familiar with the Fullerton community for years; he is a California State University of Fullerton Alumni with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies.
While enrolled at CSUF, Murray used the FC track for athletic training purposes. He also shared that a former wife of his was enrolled at FC.
In Boll's speech, she explained that the grant would be used for "student success and resources for students." This includes, "books, learning tools, computer software and library materials."
Acquisitions Librarian Monique Delatte submitted the Verizon Foundation Grant proposal.
"It was easy to apply on the website. The application is pretty time consuming. It requires a 501(c) (3) [tax-exempt organizations such as the FC Foundation] in order to apply for the grant." said Delatte.
"It took a couple of months at most to receive notice that we had been selected to receive the grant."
Delatte also expressed that Murray is very passionate about helping people.
The reception included refreshments for guests, including chocolate covered strawberries, cheesecake and several types of beverages.
President of FC Rajen Vurdien and Chancellor of North Orange County Community College District Ned Doffoney also attended the ceremony and accepted the grant on behalf of the college.
