Lady Hornets remain undefeated in conference

Fullerton easily beat Cypress and stretches its winning streak to 19.

Fullerton held off a sharp-shooting Cypress squad last Wednesday night en route to an 87-78 home win.

Cypress shot over 50 percent from the field for the game but the Hornets rebounding proved to be the deciding factor.

The lady Hornets Lead the Orange Empire Conference in rebounding with 41 boards a game.

Fullerton was swarming the boards the whole night, grabbing 39 rebounds compared to the Chargers' 28. More importantly, the Hornets grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, which provided them with many second-chance opportunities throughout the night.

"Rebounding is important in every game," said Debi Woelke, head coach. "The fact that we got a lot more offensive rebounds helped us because those are very efficient points."

Ashleigh Adams led the Hornets with 12 rebounds, 6 offensive, while Danielle Ekno and Sarah Jackson grabbed 5 of their own.

Fullerton had four players in double figures with Taiyande Huskey leading the way with 16. Jhakia McDonald and Adams added 14 points of their own while center Danielle Ekno dropped 12.

The Hornets (24-1,8-0) led by 12 points going into the half and consistent bench play, led Ashley Jsames' 7 points, helped the Hornets fend off any potential comeback attempts by Cypress.

"Rarely do we drop off with our bench," Woelke said. "Our bench is deep."

The win made the season sweep complete for Fullerton after their blow out win on Jan. 8 in Cypress.

The Hornets will next take on the Riverside Tigers on Wednesday after a bye on Monday.

The two teams previously met on Jan. 15 in Riverside. The Hornets came out on top, 67-58, despite a solid 18-point offensive display by Riverside's Gloria Thomas.

Huskey and Adams' led the Hornets with 13 points.

Woelke is working on rebounding this week in practice to ensure success on Wednesday.

"Riverside the best rebounding team in our conference," Woelke said. "We know that was a big difference last time, so we know we have to do a much better job boxing out."

Although the Hornets avreage More boards a game than Riverside, the last time these two teams played, it was Riverside who out boarded the Hornets.

This time around, the Hornets will have home-court advantage. Fullerton is undefeated in the Hornet's Nest this season.

"We love playing at home," Woelke said.

Tip-off is at 5:30.

Riverside comes into this game tied with the Lady Hornets for the highest shooting percentage in the Orange Empire Conference at 42 percent.

Both teams are averaging 71 points a game, they are evenly matched numbers wise but Fullerton is better defensively as they have 476 steals on the season.
